HARBOUR ROD & REEL CLUB 2000 HISTORY

On January 16, 2000, the Harbor Rod & Reel Club held its Sixth Annual Awards and Installation Brunch at the Yacht Club. Outgoing President Larry Coots passed the gavel to newly elected President Joyce Woodard. The Elected Officers and Board members were installed as follows:
One hundred fifteen members attended. John Thompson awarded trophies to the high anglers. The Linda Moss Memorial Trophy was awarded to top lady angler, Larae Daniels.
January 21, 2000. The Chili Cook-off was held at the Yacht Club. The cook-off was cohosted by the Harbour Rod & Reel Club and Huntington Harbor Yacht Club. Marky Paugh won top prize and NOIIIl and Julie Huniu took third prize.
February 9, 20QO. The” Inshore Fishing” with Jeff Jones Seminar was held. Jeff is the Captain of the’ charter boat, Rail Time. He shared his expertise on fishing the Horseshoe Kelp, structures, wrecks and Catalina.
March 29,2000. Gene Kim, author of “The Unforgettable Sea of Cortez” was the featured speaker at this seminar. He showed slides that were based on the life of Ray Cannon, who wrote for “Western Outdoor News”.
April 15, 2000. Casino Night – 2000 was held at the Yacht Club. Great food, provided by Becky’s Catering was enjoyed by all. Enchanted Evening Productions provided music. Cristi Ulrich, Julie Huniu and pam Fellows were in charge of decorations. Casino Chairman was Doug Bannister. The event raised funds for the Community Outreach Program.
May 5, 2000. The Cinco de Mayo party was hosted by the HR &RC and shared with the Yacht Club as a joint event. TGIF Catering provided the Mexican buffet. The Entertainment was a floorshow put on the by Itzmna Folklorica Dancers.
May 18, 2000. Thirty-nine members flew to Palmas de Cortez, Los Barriles, Baja Sur for fishing and fun. Norm and Jessica Parker put together another great trip. 146 Tuna were caught, along with Striped Marlin, Dorado, Trigger Fish, Jack Crevalle, Amber Jack, Pargo, Bonita, and one Comet Fish. Cory Calcagno earned the title of “Top Angler” of the trip with two Marlin, five Tuna and one Dorado. Marky Paugh caught the largest Dorado weighing 42 pounds. Other top winners were Bob Campbell, Ben Howard and Mike Shannon.
Members enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, a TV riding and side trips to La Paz and San Jose del Cabo. The King Harbor Marlin Club joined the HR &RCfor a party one night.
June 10, 2000. The 3rd annual joint HHYC-HRRC fishing day took place. Nineteen Yacht Club members and HR & RC members fished together on HR & RC boats. Dr. Arturo Serra caught a 26.4 lb. Halibut aboard the Fish Tales. After fishing, the group met at the Yacht Club for lunch. Marilyn Henson organized the lunch. Preston King, Steve Powers, Mike Raemer, Chris Hull, John Thompson, Larry Coots and Bill Woodard provided the boats.
June 21, 2000. The Huntington Valley Boys and Girls Club Kids Fishing Trip was held. This trip was HRRC’s main Community Outreach Program activity for this year. The April Casino Night Party made funds possible. John Ulrich was in charge of this successful trip. Fifty-six kids participated. The trip was made on the boat First String, out ofL.A. Harbor Sport fishing. The kids and volunteers enjoyed snacks and lunch and a great day of fishing. HR&RC members who helped with this trip included Joyce Woodard, John Paugh, Gary Simpson, Mike Raemer, Greg and Curtis Buchanan and Steve Slusser.
June 25, 2000 A total of 46 adults and l2 juniors participated in this weekend offishing and barbeque at the Yacht Club. Norm and Jessica Parker, and Jason and Shannon Duca organized this.event and prepared the food. Corky and Betty Bennish donated the chicken entree for the dinner. Norm Parker presented the awards program after dinner.
Junior Awards went to top angler Shaun Strobridge (6 Albacore). Most exotic catch went to Ken Slusser (Smooth hound Shark). Heaviest catch went to Shaun Strobridge (20 lb. Albacore). 2nd Place: Shaun Slusser, 3rd Place, Steve Ulrich, 4th Place Eric Henson. 5th Place, Chase Parlee. Adult Awards given were: Top Angler, Bill Woodard.
Captain’s Award: Chris Hull. Most exotic catch: Steve Slusser (Halibut). Heaviest catch: Brian Ferguson. 2nd Place: John Thompson. 3rd Place: John Ulrich. 4th Place: Amber Raemer. 5th Place: Ken Parlee.
July 28, 2000. Twilight Sand Bass Trip. Forty-six anglers participated and the Barracuda took both Junior and Senior jackpots. Ryan Lee won the kid’s jackpot and Kirk Beardsley won the adult jackpot. The fishing was off the ‘Enterprise’ based out of Long Beach Marina Sport fishing.
August 3, 2000. The Marlin Seminar held at the Bay and Racket Club was well attended.’ Mike Raemer all angedfor a panel of speakers that included Paul LePore, Dave Brackmann, Jim Kingsmill and Kenny Knight. Marie Coots provided the pizza dinner.
August 5, 2000. Six boats made for a great raft up at Dana Point Harbor. Members and guests shared food and beverages as they hopped from one boat to another. All enjoyed fish stories and great conversation. Most members took off the following morning for a day of fishing.
August 19, 2000. The first Annual Ladies Tournament was held. This event was organized by Amy Jahn and Merle King. Twenty three anglers participated on ten boats. Raffle prizes were awarded during the day of fishing. The Awards BBQ took place the next day at the Jahn home in Santa Ana. The prize for the “Most Species” went to the anglers on the boat, Fish N Fun. Kristin Coleman won heaviest catch for Sand Bass, April Grennan won the prize for Calico Bass. Marilyn Henson won for Barracuda, and Sharon Claypool won for Dorado. Sixty plus members and children attended the BBQ. Randy and Kim Coleman donated the wine from their vineyard. Prizes were donated by club members and it was a great event. The official name ofthis first tournament was “Annie Get Your Rod”.
September 5, 2000 MABT Strategy Party. Tim Harding organized the party, which was held at Doug and Kristie Bannister’s home. Mark Wisch gave advice to the group on increasing our chances of winning the tournament.
September 8. 9, 10, 2000. With Tim Harding in charge, thirty five boats representing eight fishing clubs participated in this MABT event. The HR&RC entry consisted of two tearns with eight boats. Team one included Good Karma,Retriever, Double Hook Up and Reel Time II. Team two consisted of Fiesta, Fish Tales, Fish N Fun., and Hot Reels. High angler was Dave King, Reel Time II took the high boat award and HR&RC won the “High Club”award. The awards dinner was held at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
September 24, 2000. Jeanette and Bob Ross planned another Beach Party. It was a windy party but enjoyed by all who attended. Bob Ross brought his heavy duty BBQ and guests brought dishes to share.
October 29, 2000 Chris Hull and Tim Harding hosted the Kid’s In-Harbour Fishing Derby. Marilyn Henson and her family organized and served the luncheon. The kids and the older members enjoyed prizes and treats.
November 8, 2000 Mike Raemer put together an interesting Halibut Seminar at the Yacht Club. The speakerwas Pete Waskowski of “Just Fishing”. He gave an interesting talk about our local Halibut fishery. Marilyn Henson provided an excellent pi172 dinner.
November 19,2000 Family Dinner & Casting Party — Social Chairman, Marilyn Henson provided an Italian dinner. Gift baskets donated by members were raffled.Bill Woodardand Shaun Strobridge ran the casting contest. Jeanette Ross won the ladies division. Bob Ross won the men’s division. John Thompson and Rob Henson presented “First flags” to Dewayne Brown, First Marlin. Doug Daniels, First Swordfish. Lee Parker, First Tuna .
