HISTORIANS REPORT FOR 2008
The club had another great year. The following are the trophy winners for fishing in 2008.
March 13th, HHRC took a tour of the white sea bass hatchery in Carlsbad. The tour was led by Bob Mandic , 16 people attended. They got to sea (see) first hand the stages of growth of the white sea bass. Lunch followed the tour.
March 22nd , Forty people were rallied to enjoy a potluck party at the HHYC . The hit of the day was the jars filled with jelly beans, candy bars and fish crackers.
April 15th, Dick Uranga from “Iron Man” lures gave a very informative seminar on lures. No this was not an “info-merical” for “iron man” lures.
April 24th to 26th, The front side of Catalina was the site for the Spring raft up with HHYC.
May 1st, HRRC was invited to Cinco de Mayo by HHYC , There was live music and dancing and plenty of Marigitas.
May 2nd, was the annual AFTCO “Day at the lots”
May 13th, Mike “The Beak” Hurt told his secrets for successful fishing in this well attended seminar. Questions were answered well into the late night.
May 23rd, HHRC hosted the HHYC to fishing, “Day on the Horseshoe Kelp” After a mixed day
of fishing, weather conditions that is, anglers enjoyed lunch at the Yacht Club.
June 4th to 8th, the annual migration to Palmas de Cortez ,organized by Norm Parker.
The fish count was up and so was the consumption of coronas. The seas were calm and the weather was great.
June io”. Family Fishing Tournament – Canceled, due to lack of commitment. What happened?
June zs”. HHRC Community Outreach Kids Fishing Trip. Sixty lucky kids from the Huntington Valley Boys and Girls Club were treated to a day of fishing by the HHRC. Ten club members spent the day hooking, untangling and baiting lines. Our hats off to John Ulrich for organizing this special event.
July 11 th , First annual Casino Night Fund Raiser at HHYC. Great job by Chairperson Joyce Woodard and her many committees. The proceeds funds the community outreach program. It was a very fun and successful night.
July 17th, Annual Twilight Sand Bass trip to Huntington Flats. This was a well attended event with children, grandchildren, parents and wives catching fish. Two yellowtails were caught one by Chris Strobridge and one by Bob Mandic.
July z+”. H.O.P.E. received 1900 juvenile white sea bass for the HH growout pen.
July, complete and installed in the HHYC a HRRC trophy case. Now it is the clubs job to fill it with notable trophies.
August 9th thru 16th. fifteen HRRC boats stayed at the Hotel Coral and Marina. Lots of fish and coronas were boated.
August 19th HRRC fishes The Los Pescadores Tournament. Bagels and dresses were required in this one. Have you checked out the photos of Ron Moss or the now “infamous” photo of Randy Coleman in a dress? This sexy team took second place.
August zs”: HRRC ladies attended the Ladies Billfish Tournament by the Balboa Angling Club. It was attended by 4 HRRC boats. Kathy Crooymans on “Reel Time” took 4th place.
September 11th_13th ,Master Angler Billfish Tournament was attended by boats. HRRC took trophies and fish stories home from this tournament.
October rz”, H.O.P.E. released 1575 white sea bass from the growout pen into the harbour. October 14th, seminar by Paul LePore on Mag Bay. Bill Woodard and Dave Brockman also informed us of their experiences.
October is”. the third annual Kids In-Harbour Fishing Derby. Attended by over two dozen kids and many parents and grandparents. This successful event netted many fish and fun stories. It was followed by awards and lunch at the HHYC.
November is”: was the date of the annual pot luck and casting party. The potluck format was change to prime rib and chicken. There was winners in the adult and juniors castinq competition, who received trophies or gifts.
The seventh annual Annie Get Your Rod Ladies Tournament was held on August 13th Fish N Fun, Retriever, Reel Time II, Sparkler and Invader were all on time for the shotgun start at the entrance to the harbour. Kathy Bayless was the event captain and Marilyn Henson awarded prizes to the lady anglers throughout the day. The top lady anglers were: Joyce Woodard, Marilyn Henson, Erin King, and Cinta Masterton. The most species award went to Fish N Fun. Thank you to all of the ladies who fished (and their crew!) for making this tournament a true ladies day. Following the great day of fishing, Preston King hosted the dinner at his home.
On August 1 ih, Ed Martin, along with his wife Betty, presented a seminar on antique tackle. Twenty-two members enjoyed the evening with the Martins.
The Master Angler’s Billjish Tournament was held on September 15th _17th Bob Mandie took 3rd Place and Bob Hetzler’s grandson Trent Ward took loth Place. The boats entered from our club were: BreaKaway, Retriever, Sparkler, Two Un-Reel, Invader, Double Hook-Up, Escape for Gailketraz, Finhunter, Reel Time II, Tapped Out, Hot Reels, Lady II Di IV, Pescador, Fish N Fun, Fiesta and Coho. Thanks to all the captains for entering their boats and representing HR&RC in this tournament.
Mako Matt gave a Kid’s Seminar on October 15th He gave the kids instructions on how to fish the harbour.
The Kid’s In-Harbour Fishing Derby was held on Sunday, October 22nd. Tom Pack and his crew on his boat the Juscor passed out scorecards, tackle, live anchovies and ghost shrimp to the kids. After all of the fishing was done, Jeff and Sharie Sneddon grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch at the yacht club.
This year’s Casting Contest was held on November Ith. A nice crowd enjoyed brunch and, of course, casting for the big prize. This years casting contest winners were: Marilyn Henson in the ladies contest, Chris Gialketsis in the men’s division and Lauren Brackmann came in 1 st in the kids division. There was also some side-betting going on, i.e., who could reel in a 5 lb. weight in the fastest time. Chris Gialketsis also took that race. Thanks to all the members for being at this event and making it a keeper!
Friday, December 1 st was the fourth annual Holiday Party at the yacht club. The “Surf City Singers” from the Academy of Performing Arts at Huntington Beach High School entertained us with holiday songs. Jim Rice provided the music and even got the crowd up to dance! Santa gave presents to all of the younger members and friends at the party and we all had to sit on Santa’s lap and get our picture taken with Santa. Thanks to Jeff & Sharie Sneddon, Jim Persons, Mark Zimmerman and Marilyn Henson for contributing all of their time and effort in making this a truly fun party.
